Tavenner Nomination to Head CMS Clears Senate

Posted on 5/15/2013 by NTOCC ®

Today, the Senate confirmed President Obama’s nominee, Marilyn Tavenner, to oversee the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) by a vote of 91 to 7.

Last month, Tavenner’s nomination had cleared the Senate Finance Committee with a bipartisan vote, only to be temporarily blocked for a full vote on the Senate floor by Senator Tom Harkin (D- IA).  Senator Harkin had been outspoken about his frustration over the Administration’s use of the Affordable Care Act’s Prevention Fund (which Harkin had championed during health care reform) to help cover implementation costs of the 2010 health law.

Tavenner took over as CMS Administrator Berwick’s successor and has been serving as the Acting Administrator of CMS since December 2011. She has spent much of that time implementing many aspects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, of which many important (and controversial) aspects are due for full implementation in January, 2014.
